This session will provide an overview of affordable housing programs in the U.S., the current status of needs, and which subsidy tools are best positioned for being a part of innovative solutions. The presentation will delve into affordable housing finance, definitions of affordability, tenant-based vs. project-based support, and an overview of the challenging financing realities of developing operating affordable housing that meets the needs of low-income people.
Joey Lindstrom, Field Director for the
National Low Income Housing Coalition, will lead this session. In addition to the above, he will also provide updates on nationwide efforts to protect and expand affordable housing programs, resist HUD’s efforts to roll-back discrimination protections, and pass bold new legislative proposals.
Participants will learn more about simple actions to take and explore ongoing campaigns to influence the federal and state policy process. Joey will also feature information on how affordable housing programs are impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and recession. This discussion will include a review of the current CDC eviction moratorium and the various proposals advancing in Congress on a spending package.
P.S. Check out the NLIHC's
2020 Advocates' Guide - it will give you the overview of housing programs and advocacy tools you need to be a leader in the affordable housing movement and to advocate effectively for socially just housing policy.
